Summer is a time for sunshine, holidays, and long days outdoors — but while most of us remember to protect our skin, we often forget that our eyes also need special care during the warmer months.
Mr Michael O’Rourke shares his top tips for keeping your eyes safe, healthy, and comfortable all summer long.

☀️ 1. Sunglasses Are Essential
Wearing sunglasses in summer is about more than looking stylish. Sunglasses with 100% UV protection help shield your eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays, which can contribute to cataracts, macular degeneration, and even eyelid cancers.
When choosing sunglasses, check for the CE mark or a UV 400 label. Wraparound styles are especially effective at blocking sunlight from all angles.
💧 2. Keep Yourself (and Your Eyes) Hydrated
Hot weather increases the risk of dehydration, which in turn can lead to dry, irritated eyes. Staying well-hydrated helps maintain healthy tear production and reduces discomfort, especially if you're prone to dry eye symptoms.
Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day, particularly if you're active or spending time in the sun. Air conditioning, fans, and summer breezes can all dry out the eyes. If your eyes start to feel gritty, itchy, or tired, consider using lubricating eye drops to help restore moisture. Opt for preservative-free drops if you use them regularly.
Keeping your eyes moist helps prevent irritation and reduces the urge to rub them — which is especially important during allergy season.
🧴 3. Take Care with Sun Cream
Sun protection is vital, but applying sun cream near the eyes can be tricky. Sunscreen that gets into the eyes can cause stinging and redness.
To reduce the risk of irritation, apply sun cream carefully and consider using mineral-based or sensitive skin formulations around the eye area. Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your face.
🏖️ 4. No Swimming in Contact Lenses
Swimming pools, lakes, and the sea may feel refreshing, but they also carry bacteria and microorganisms that can be harmful to your eyes — especially if you wear contact lenses.
To protect your eyes, remove your lenses before swimming or use prescription goggles. This helps prevent infections such as Acanthamoeba keratitis, which can be serious and difficult to treat.
👁️ 5. Soothe Seasonal Allergies
If your eyes feel itchy and watery during summer, hay fever could be to blame. Antihistamine eye drops, cold compresses, and avoiding high-pollen environments can help soothe allergy symptoms.
Wearing wraparound sunglasses outdoors also provides a barrier against pollen, reducing irritation while protecting from UV rays at the same time.
🧢 6. Add a Hat to Your Summer Wardrobe
A wide-brimmed hat provides an extra layer of protection against sunlight, reducing glare and shielding your eyes and the sensitive skin around them.
Pairing a hat with good-quality sunglasses offers comprehensive protection for your eye health.
🔍 7. Book an Eye Check Before You Travel
Before heading off on holiday, it’s wise to get your eyes checked — especially if you wear glasses or contact lenses. A routine eye exam ensures your prescription is current and gives you the chance to pick up a second pair or prescription sunglasses.
This small step can save you from the hassle of dealing with vision issues while away.
Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors, travel, and relax — and with just a few simple precautions, you can ensure your eyes stay protected throughout the season.
With Mr Michéal O’Rourke’s guidance, you can step into summer with clear, comfortable vision and confidence!
