Introducing In-House Eyelid Surgery at the Institute of Dermatologists

Last weekend marked an exciting milestone, as I had the opportunity to help launch the first in-house blepharoplasty service at the Institute of Dermatologists.

With demand for eyelid surgery continuing to grow, and access remaining limited in many settings, it felt like the right time to introduce a more streamlined and patient-focused approach within the clinic.

Why This Service Was Needed

In my practice, I regularly see patients seeking upper eyelid surgery for both functional and aesthetic reasons, from heavy, tired-looking eyes to excess skin affecting vision.

One of the biggest challenges has been access to timely treatment.

By introducing this service at the Institute of Dermatologists, we are helping to improve availability and offer patients a more direct route to care in a trusted clinical setting.

A Simple and Efficient Procedure

A key priority in developing this service was to make the process as straightforward as possible for patients.

Upper eyelid surgery is performed as a day case procedure, which means:

  • It typically takes around 60 minutes

  • Patients return home the same day

  • Most people resume normal activities within 3 to 4 days

This approach allows patients to benefit from effective treatment with minimal disruption to daily life.

Reflecting International Best Practice

In establishing this service, it was important to ensure the approach reflects international best practice seen in leading dermatology centres.

Eyelid surgery requires a careful balance of both function and appearance, and this principle underpins every stage of patient care.

Supporting the Growth of Surgical Dermatology

I am delighted to have played a role in expanding the surgical offering at the Institute of Dermatologists.

The introduction of in house blepharoplasty represents an important step forward, improving access, reducing waiting times, and enhancing the overall patient experience.

Looking Ahead

This is a positive development for both patients and the clinic. By bringing eyelid surgery into this setting, we are making high quality care more accessible while maintaining the highest standards of safety and precision.
