Dr Michéal O’Rourke has over 15 years of experience diagnosing and treating the full spectrum of eye conditions.
His area of expertise is Oculoplastic surgery having trained at international centres of excellence by leaders in the field. As a dual-trained surgeon, he combines the precision of intraocular micro-surgery and the aesthetic and reconstructive aspects of plastic surgery. This blend of training provides an essential balance between cosmetic and corrective surgery while maintaining the natural form and function of the eyelid.

Dr O’Rourke graduated with an honours degree from the School of Medicine at Trinity College, Dublin in 2007 (MB BCh BAO). Ophthalmology appealed to him due to the combination of both medical treatments and surgical procedures which can hugely improve a person’s quality of life. He was accepted on to the Irish specialist training programme at RVEEH.
Following years of intensive training, being proficiency in all areas of ophthalmology, he was subsequently enrolled as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (FRCSI(Ophth)). He is also a fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO). Subsequently, he pursued subspecialisation in oculoplastic surgery at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, UK in 2019. He embarked on 2 further years of fellowship training at the Orbit, Plastics & Lacrimal (OPAL) unit at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne and The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, Australia. This furthered deepened his expertise through exposure to a high volume of complex cases, learning niche skills and gaining valuable experience working with highly respected mentors.
After coming back to Ireland, he applies these innovative techniques to provide optimal care for his patients.
Complementing his clinical and surgical skills, Dr O’Rourke has a strong academic interest. In 2015 he was awarded a PhD following a 3 year, full-time clinical and translational research project in ocular immunology at University College Dublin and Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute, TCD. This body of work was presented at national and international conferences being duly recognised with numerous prizes, awards and publications. Coupled with this, a diploma in statistics (PG Dip Stat) allows him to apply rigorous data analysis and evidence-based practice to his work.
His academic interests continues as he continues to publishes and collaborates with international experts, as well as academic reviewing in wide-reaching ophthalmology journals. He particularly enjoys teaching and has worked as a tutor with RCSI and is currently Senior Clinical Lecturer with SJH / TCD School of medicine.
He was recently appointed to the board of the Irish College of Ophthalmologists (ICO). He is a medical advisor and committee member of the Thyroid Eye Disease Charitable Trust (TEDct). He previously served as director and board member of the charitable Research Foundation at The Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital. He is the current Irish nominee at the European Leadership & Development programme (EuLPD) . This pan-European programme identifies future leaders in ophthalmology and provides leadership skills adapted to the specialty while harmonising training and health policy legislation in Europe by fostering global peer networks.
He connects nationally and internationally through many specialist society membership organisations.
His extensive training affords him a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of ophthalmology, He recently completed a high intensity training programme on optimising refractive outcomes in CATARACT SURGERY at the Vision Experience Centre, Barcelona.
He benchmarks refractive using the European Registry of Quality Outcomes for Cataract and Refractive Surgery (EUREQUO).
He has a particular interest in thyroid eye disease, facial palsy, peri-ocular cancers, surgical correction of eyelid malpositions and paediatric oculoplastics.
